No matter how hard Shelby fought, her body couldn’t help but flush under Cody’s heated gaze. Pulling the sheet tighter, she backed up a little, needing to get her thoughts together. Because right now, she wanted nothing more than to drag him back to bed and trace her lips over his bare chest. God, stop staring at the man’s chest.
“Shelby, honey,” Cody drawled. “You keep looking at me like that . . . well, I already told you what’d happen.”
Tack room, right. Shelby jerked her eyes to meet his, felt them bulge a little and had the good sense to feign innocence. Cody gave a soft hoot of laughter, seeing right through her wide-eyed act.
Easing down and bringing his massive frame to her eye level, Cody snaked an arm around her waist, hauling her flush with his chest. An involuntary groan slipped out when her aching breasts pressed firm against his bare skin.
“That’s what I thought,” Cody laughed. “So tomorrow we go on a ride. The three of us. Maybe a picnic, a little fishing, and a lot of talking. And even more kissing.” He leaned forward and sucked her lower lip into his mouth, then straightened. “See, already got sidetracked.”
Shelby’s brows lowered, but not quite far enough to come off as reprimanding as she’d hoped. “I’d like that.”
“The riding or the kissing?” Cody smiled that smile that made her stomach skitter like a nervous teenager’s. And she saw, for the first time since Cody had come back, a glimpse of the fun-loving boy she’d fallen in love with.
Now it was Shelby’s turn to smile. “Everything.”
“Shelby Lynn.” Cody’s voice was as somber as his face and she knew exactly what he wanted to talk about. Her embarrassing proposition. Great
“Look, about the contract,” she began, hot with humiliation, and wishing she could burn the papers and pretend they had never existed. Wishing for a whole lot of things that wouldn’t fix the current situation.
“Screw the damn contract.” Cody angled her head toward his, bringing their gazes together. “I should have stepped up and made JT mine the second I saw him in the kitchen.”
“What does that mean?” She needed to know.
“What I said the other night. I want to get to know my son. I’ve missed out on nine years and I won’t miss any more.”
Jake was so hungry for male attention, he would attach himself to anyone, Shelby thought. So the fact that his daddy was Cody, a walking superhero, would make the bond all the stronger. The man was the stuff of a little boy’s dreams—strong, powerful, smart, athletic, could throw a ball and ride a horse like nobody’s business. And now he had a truck. Shelby was nervous that when Cody moved back to his busy life in Austin, he’d wind up resenting having to make time for a son. Just like Preston had.
“And what happens if you get to know him and parenthood isn’t what you imagined it would be like? He isn’t what you thought he’d be.
